10 European Union manufacturers and research institutes such as the British Process Innovation Center (CPI) announced that the unit conversion efficiency of flexible CIGS solar cells manufactured by roll-to-roll (R2R) approach reached 20%, and module efficiency reached 16%. The pilot plant for mass production has also been completed.
This result is under the EU-funded "R2R-CIGS" project (period 㯠April 2012 - September 2015), by CPI, the Swiss Federal Institute of Materials Testing and Development (EMPA), Swiss Flisom, Austria ISOVOLTAIC company, Germany Manz CIGS Technology company, German Baden-Württemberg Solar and Hydrogen Energy Research Center (ZSW), Spain Mondragon Assembly company, Finland Beneq company, Netherlands VDL company, Dutch research institute TNO co-developed.
The CIGS solar cell does not use cadmium (Cd), and is manufactured by a co-evaporation method that has not yet been successfully mass-produced. In addition to the film formation of the active layer that facilitates power generation, the surface transparent electrode film and the moisture-resistant barrier film also adopt the R2R process.
Manufacturing technologies for the main parts such as active layers and transparent electrode films of solar cells were developed by Flisom. The company received funding from the Tata Group in India and launched a production line with a capacity of 15MW per year for flexible CIGS solar cells in June 2015.
The moisture resistance of the barrier film (WVTR) was 10-3 g/m2/day at the start of the project. By using a method of forming an alumina (AlOx) film with a thickness of 20 nm on a PET film, it has now reached 10-4 g/m 2 /day. At this time, the film formation speed at a roll width of 0.5 m was 1 m/min. (Reporter: Nozawa Tetsuo)
